Career Development
Career planning and development activities provide employees with assistance to develop realistic career goals and strategies to realise them. Individuals are best placed to develop their own action plan to achieve a particular career objective, as only the individual can answer these key questions:- What is important to me?
- How hard am I prepared to work?
- Am I prepared to undertake further study?
- Am I prepared to make the necessary sacrifices to achieve my career goals?
While support is available from supervisors, ultimate responsibility for career management rests with the individual. This process does not happen automatically, and a conscious effort on the part of the employee is vital to ensure a successful career plan.
Driving Your Career
You can drive your career at the University with a better understanding of:
- Your role as Planner and Developer: this includes undertaking honest self-assessment and reflection, maintaining an awareness of job and development opportunties, productive decision making, and career planning and action
- Your Supervisor’s role as Coach and Facilitator: this includes assessing your performance and strengths, providing information and referrals, and guiding and coaching you.
- Human Resources’ role as The Support System: this includes induction, performance review and assessment, career development, affirmative action, advertising employment opportunities and providing training and development programs.
Career Counselling
The EOD Unit provides a referral service to external career counsellors who are familiar with career development issues in the University context. A career counsellor may assist you to:
- Understand your interests, skills, strengths, values and personality – and how they may impact upon your career choices.
- Establish a short or long term career plan.
- Identify development opportunities in line with a career plan. This may include formalised training, mentoring, networking or work-based activities such as secondments.
- Explore and resolve complex issues impacting on your current work performance, work/life balance or job satisfaction.
It is recommended that the career advice be conducted over two sessions, of around an hour each. All consultations are confidential. Staff may attend during work hours provided they have their supervisor’s approval. Participants or Departments (subject to approval) meet the cost of their first appointment and the EOD Unit may fund the second appointment.
