2009 Awards for the Professional Development of Academic
and Professional staff
This trust originated from a bequest of 5,000 from the will of Cornelius Regan to the University in 1943. (http://www.unimelb.edu.au/Statutes/r7067.pdf)
The net income of the trust may be used by academic and professional staff to assist them to present at a professional conference, or for other educational purposes in connection with their work at the University.
The objective of any award from this fund is to provide recognition and assistance to outstanding academic and professional staff, by enabling them to pursue a worthwhile activity in relation to their work.
Eligibility
Award(s) will be made annually to academic and professional staff (subject to availability of funds).
Value of Award(s)
The value and number of awards each year will be determined by the Cornelius Regan Trust Committee. However the awarded funds should be sufficient to enable the successful applicant/s to pursue a development opportunity in relation to their work, for example, a course of study, a project, or to present at a conference.
Selection Committee
The committee has the following members:
- Vice-Principal (Human Resources) - Chair
- Senior academic staff member
- Senior professional staff member
- Director, Organisational Development (or representative).
Selection Criteria
The committee will be responsible for considering the applications and selecting the most suitable applicant/s using the following criteria:
- Applications for professional development must show clear links to building organisational capability and achieving Growing Esteem strategy.
- Applicants must have a sustained performance record with a rating of Good or higher at their last completed performance development review.
Closing Date
Applications should be addressed to the Chair of Cornelius Regan Trust Committee, Mr Nigel Waugh, Vice-Principal (Human Resources) and forwarded to:

Applications
Applications must be written and submitted by the applicant, using the Application Cover Page Template.
Applications must also include a one page summary of the project to be undertaken, which
- Describes the proposed project, development opportunity, conference etc for which you seek to use this grant
- Explains the benefit to the University
- Includes an estimate of expenses (or budget).
In addition, applications should include:
- A supporting statement from the Head of Department or nominee
- Curriculum vitae.
When more than one application is received from a particular faculty or division, the application, signed and dated by the applicant, gives the Trust Administrator permission to forward the applications to the Head of the faculty/budget division, who will prioritise the applications.
Timeframe
The award funds must be used within 12 months.
Funds
Grant money will remain with the Human Resources Division and will be paid into a faculty or departmental account at, or shortly before, the time of expenditure. Any unexpended funds will be returned to the trust. Any additional money expended, above the amount awarded, is the responsibility of the department(s) of the awardee(s).
Acquittal Report
Awardees will be required, within three months of completing their project to provide an acquittal report to the committee and their Head of department.
