Performance Development Training
The Performance Development Framework and performance development practices are key enablers for the University of Melbourne to achieve the Growing Esteem strategy and its vision to be a public-spirited and international institution highly regarded for its distinctive contribution to society.
The following learning and development program are here to support the performance development practices at the University.
eLearning: Performance Development Framework (PDF)
The PDF for Staff or PDF for Supervisors eLearning course, whichever is appropriate for your current role, must successfully be completed within the probation period or first six months of your employment, whichever is the shorter period. On transferring to a supervisory role, staff must complete the PDF for Supervisors eLearning course.
- PDF for Staff An eLearning course aimed to inform staff on the PDF, how it can be used to support their development and assist them to reach their objectives, whilst contributing to the achievement of the University's goals.
- PDF for Supervisors An eLearning course which aims to ensure that supervisors understand, and can confidently work within, the PDF to assist staff to perform to their best, grow and develop as they realise the Unit’s objectives and contribute to the achievement of the University’s goals.

PDF Skills Sessions
In addition to the eLearning course a series of face-to-face, interactive PDF Skills Sessions are available for staff and supervisors to further develop their skills.
Prerequisite
Before enrolling in a Skills Sessions you must have completed either: the PDF eLearning program (from 2012), or the previous PDF face-to-face program.
PDF Skills Sessions for Staff
- Session 1: Writing Performance Objectives and Indicators This practical, interactive skills session aims to enhance staff capability in writing performance objectives and indicators within the context of the Performance Development Framework.
- Session 2: Giving and Receiving Feedback This practical, interactive session aims to build skills to assist in receiving and using feedback to aid development and increase confidence in providing constructive and useful feedback to others.
- Session 3: Career and Development Planning Conversations This practical, interactive session aims to enable academic and professional staff to effectively engage in meaningful career and development planning conversations within the context of the Performance Development Framework.
- Session 4: Preparing for the Performance Review Discussion This practical, interactive session aims to assist academic and professional staff to effectively prepare for the performance review discussion to enable active and confident participation making for a productive and useful experience.
PDF Skills Sessions for Supervisors
- Session 1: Communicating the PDF Policy to Staff This practical, interactive skills session aims to enhance manager and supervisor capability to communicate policy and principles that underpin the Performance Development Framework and respond confidently to staff questions around PDF.
- Session 2: Writing Performance Objectives and Indicators This practical, interactive skills session is provided to enhance manager and supervisor capability to coach staff in writing performance objectives and indicators within the context of the Performance Development Framework.
- Session 3: Career and Development Planning Conversations This practical, interactive skills session aims to enhance the capability of supervisors of academic and professional staff to effectively facilitate meaningful career and development planning conversations within the context of the Performance Development Framework.
- Session 4: Assessing and Reviewing Performance This practical, interactive skills session aims to enhance manager and supervisor capability in assessing and reviewing performance within the Performance Development Framework.
- Session 5: Providing Feedback - From Informal to Difficult Conversations This practical, interactive skills session aims to enhance manager and supervisor capability to deliver feedback and hold effective conversations around performance at all stages of the Performance Development Framework.
- Session 6: Managing Unsatisfactory Performance This practical, interactive skills session aims to enhance the capability of supervisors to manage unsatisfactory performance confidently and effectively in accordance with University policies with the aim of assisting underperforming staff to develop and achieve the required level of performance.
